Emotional Freedom Techniques for Stress Relief and Personal Growth

Experience Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

EFT, or “Tapping Therapy,” is a mind–body approach that blends elements of cognitive and behavioral techniques with the physical act of tapping specific meridian endpoints. Whether you’re seeking relief from stress, anxiety, pain, or traumatic memories, EFT may help “reprogram” the way your mind and body respond to negative thoughts and emotions.

What is EFT?

What Is EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)?

EFT is sometimes described as “psychological acupressure.” By focusing on a troubling thought or emotion while gently tapping on specific meridian points, you can potentially calm the stress response connected to that issue. This process may alleviate emotional distress, reduce physical discomfort, and promote a sense of peace.

  • Combines cognitive/behavioral skills with physical tapping
  • Focuses on releasing negative emotions and beliefs
  • Aims to “reprogram” or calm the mind–body stress response

Originally adapted from Thought Field Therapy by Gary Craig in the mid-1990s, EFT has evolved into a user-friendly, flexible practice that many find effective for various emotional and physical issues.

How EFT Works

How Does EFT Tapping Work?

EFT typically follows a simple sequence:

  1. Identify the Issue: Pinpoint a specific problem, memory, or feeling you want to address.
  2. Set Up and Acknowledge: Rate your distress (e.g., 0–10) and use a statement such as, “Even though I feel this anxiety, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
  3. Tap on Meridian Points: With Hugh’s guidance, you will tap on yourself at specific meridian points (e.g., the karate chop, eyebrow, side of the eye, under the eye, etc.) while repeating a reminder phrase about the issue.
  4. Record and Reassess: I encourage you to record the session. This way, you can review the process at home, repeat the tapping on your own, and monitor your progress as you reassess your distress levels.

By combining mindful exposure to negative emotions with the calming effect of self-tapping under direct instruction, EFT may help regulate the body’s stress response. Some studies suggest it lowers cortisol levels and eases anxiety symptoms. While more research is ongoing, many users report immediate, noticeable relief.

Schedule Your Tapping Therapy

What to Expect in an EFT Session

In your first EFT session, we’ll discuss your primary concerns, goals, and any specific issues causing distress. Hugh will then guide you through the tapping process, ensuring you know exactly which points to tap on your own.

  • Exploring relevant thoughts, memories, or fears
  • Establishing a “setup statement” to acknowledge the issue
  • Gently tapping on your own meridian points under Hugh’s clear instruction
  • Monitoring changes in emotional or physical intensity
  • Recording the session so you can revisit and repeat the process at home

Clients often describe feeling lighter, calmer, or less reactive to negative thoughts after tapping. Some notice improvements immediately, while others find that regularly reviewing their recorded sessions helps deepen the benefits over time.

Research Highlights

  • Anxiety & PTSD: Studies indicate EFT may reduce symptoms of anxiety and post-traumatic stress, with some research suggesting decreased cortisol levels.
  • Chronic Pain: Anecdotal and preliminary findings show EFT can help manage chronic pain by addressing stress that exacerbates pain perception.
  • Cognitive & Emotional Benefits: Tapping while focusing on a distressing issue appears to calm the amygdala, aiding in emotional regulation.

Although further large-scale, long-term research is ongoing, many practitioners and clients have found EFT to be a powerful complement to traditional therapies.
